In this extraordinary natural environment, human presence has been documented since ancient times: from Neolithic nomadic hunters, whose traces were almost entirely erased by floods from the underground stream, to settlements and sacred buildings from historical periods. Once an inaccessible fortress during Roman rule, the cave may have later been used as an Arian place of worship, and in the pre-Lombard era, as a site for Byzantine monks.
