SMO | Slovensko Multimedialno Okno

The Museum of San Pietro al Natisone – dedicated to the cultural landscape stretching from the Julian Alps to the sea, from Mount Mangart to the Gulf of Trieste – represents one of the new forms emerging among thematic and regional museums: no longer museums of Collection, but museums of Narrative.

This museum is unique for various reasons. Firstly, as previously mentioned, it stands out for its experiential storytelling approach: instead of relying on traditional collections, the SMO Museum focuses on narrative and experience, immersing visitors in the border’s cultural landscape through engaging stories and art installations. The museum encompasses a vast geographic area, offering a unique perspective on the region’s history and culture.

Architect Donatella Ruttar has designed a space that harmoniously integrates with the surrounding environment, making the visit even more immersive. Furthermore, the SMO Museum is part of a cross-border cooperation program between Italy and Slovenia, which promotes understanding and interaction between the two cultures.

In summary, the SMO Museum in San Pietro al Natisone is not just an exhibition space, but an immersive cultural experience that celebrates and preserves the rich cultural landscape of the vibrant Slovenian minority along the border.
