Explore the valleys
From Cividale heading west, at higher altitudes, follow the Slovenian villages connected to the Friulian lowland municipalities of Torreano, Faedis, Attimis, and Nimis. Among these, the locality of Porzûs is particularly famous and is a destination for pilgrimages. Above Nimis (or, from another perspective, south of the Breginj basin), stretches the Cornappo valley, which includes the territory of the municipality of Taipana. The villages are small and immersed in lush nature. The Slovenian place names tell the story of these locations and reflect their natural, geographical, and anthropological characteristics. The church is the heart of each village; the most important ones are in Monteaperta, dedicated to the Holy Trinity (Sveta Trojica), dating back to 1455 and home to 16th-century frescoes, and in San Leonardo in Prossenicco, featuring a Slovenian-language Way of the Cross.
At the Taipana town hall, there is an exhibition called “Testimonies of peasant civilization”, while in Prossenicco you can see the črna kuhinja (black kitchen), preserved as it was in the post-war period, and visit collections showcasing memories of the village. In local taverns and farm stays, delicious regional dishes are served. Goat cheese, in particular, is well known and highly appreciated.
